The first banner with
thirteen stars and thirteen stripes was flown at the Battle of
Bennington on August 16, 1777. That victory paved the way for a
further triumph a few months later at Saratoga. The "Columbia," a
merchant ship from Boston first carried the Stars and Stripes around
the world in 1787. |
