The state flag,
known as the Lone Star Flag, was adopted in 1839. The red stands
for bravery, the white represents purity, and the blue is for
loyalty. The front of the state seal also has a lone star. The oak
branch to the left of the star symbolizes strength, and the olive
branch to the right of the star stands for peace. The reverse side
of the seal includes a display of the six flags that have flown
over Texas.
Texas has a larger area than any other state in the United States
except Alaska. It is bigger than Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Michigan, and Wisconsin combined. According to the 2000 census,
Texas ranked second among the states in population, after
California. Five cities in Texas rank among the nation's top 25 in
population. These cities are Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin,
and El Paso. |
