Washington's flag
was adopted in 1938. Its design is based on George Washington's
coat of arms. The city seal, adopted in 1871, shows Justice
placing a wreath on a statue of George Washington.
District of Columbia
(D.C.) is the seat of the U.S. government. It covers 68 square
miles (177 square kilometers) along the Potomac River between
Maryland and Virginia. The city of Washington covers the entire
